Clean Up Progress Report…

The clean up continues after a hiatus…I was sick in April and I swear the bug just went and hid, it didn’t really go away…it made itself known again a couple of weeks ago in a last ditch effort after which it seems to have finally left the building…the result, a couple of months of feeling rather blah and it taking all my energy just to get to and from and remain upright at work…

I figured out the whole selling things on the e-bay and the virtual garage sale so far has resulted in three lace curtains, three sets of bedroom curtains, one bookcase and the small freezer finding new productive lives.

I was able to wash the laundry walls and scrub the tiles once the small freezer was removed.  The laundry is a much more user friendly space now without the freezer in there, it was just so cluttered.  There really is only room for the washing machine and dryer (which was sitting on top of the freezer).

There is a lot of stuff to go in the virtual garage sale and it will take ages to get through but a space is created each time which is good.  The living area needs to be wall washed, carpet cleaned, etc, but stuff for the virtual garage sale has kind of moved out into that space so that will probably be the last space to be scrubbed. Mmm…or the office room, it is a disaster zone still…

Outside renovations have progressed…the front and back grass is under control so that mowing isn’t a whole day event and doesn’t wreck me for a week…all the weeds  sprayed a couple of months ago have now dried up to a lovely shade of dead and are removable without the need for heavy machinery.  First weed job was the driveway (it isn’t concreted) cleaned up so it isn’t like driving into a paddock, yay!

In the front yard I took to the plants that line the driveway with the electric hedge trimmer…I love that tool, it is so much fun!…and now I can get in and out of Larry without being attacked by plants…and the garden beds around the house are weeded…the garden bed in front of the lounge room window is half weeded…it is a jungle in there! but I ran out of both muscles and space in the trailer…

It was jumped on a couple of times as well so it was really really full…it was taken to the tip yesterday…so empty again and ready for some more action.

I want to clean up the plants in the front yard, maybe take out a couple and replace…not sure yet…but first the cleaning up stuff…

In the backyard I have cleaned the weeds out of the garden bed with the rosemary, cut both the rosemary bushes back…one of them had gone all wooody (they are two different varieties), I cut it right down so that it can regenerate…if it doesn’t I’ll just pull it out, no bother and replace it with something else…I found the thyme plant, knew it was there somewhere! and cleaned up the rhubarb plant which needs to be divided…

There is still a fair bit of weed removal in the backyard and the roses have to be pruned as well but it is only the beginning of winter and I’m hoping to use the next couple of months as clean up time before the spring growth starts.

Back indoors – yesterday in an attempt to stop the wind whistling in under the doors I made a couple of draught stoppers from scraps of curtain material and calico in the pile of non-quilting fabric…warmer already!…

Herself has given the sniff of approval and it appears the test was passed…

Right that tells me where I am up to as of now…now to figure out how to get an extension for my study assignment…that was another thing that lost the plot during the blahs…

(I started this post nearly two weeks ago…each time I tried to get it up and running WordPress wouldn’t play nice with me…not uploading photos or the day that it wasn’t there at all *sigh*…of course, then I forgot all about it…and it has been languishing as a draft ever since…)

Not much of an update but I need to note what I’ve done…

I have a short hallway…passageway…call it what you will…it’s short…5 of my normal steps takes me from the start to the bedroom door…so it is five steps long and at each end is a one step square bit to the left or right depending on which direction you are coming from and which end you are at at the time…so you’d think that it wouldn’t take all that long on a Sunday to give it a spruce up with the wall/ceiling mop thingy, the vacuum and the Bissell…you’d think that…but you would be wrong!!!

Why? Because why would anything ever be straighforward in my world…that would be too much to ask and it just wouldn’t happen…first off move the “excess stuff” that has moved from the sewing room into the hall because, well, that was where it landed really and what should you do when you are moving said stuff (read small wardrobe/cupboard arrangement)….bash the corner of said piece of furniture into the corner of the wall and remove great chunk of plaster…

Exhibit A...

Aaaaggghhhhh….I wasn’t planning on playing with cornice cement but now apparently I will be….

Oh well, move along that can wait…wash ceiling, wash walls, wash skirting and architraves…forget that in said small space there are 6, yes 6, of these…

1 down, 5 to go...

…takes longer to wipe down skirting and architrave in small space equal to 7 of my steps than for either sewing room or bedroom…*sigh*…

Mix up carpet shampoo stuff, take two sweeps of carpet with the shampooer and…the safety switch trips…bugger!  Out to switchboard, reset and away we go…back inside the shampooer is humming away with electricity again pouring into it until…I move it…at all…just the action of releasing the handle cuts the power again…repeat 5 times…give up…go do something else…

An hour later…have another go…and it co-operates…why? what the?  the only thing that was different was the washing machine was not doing its thing at the same time…so, note to self…it appears washing machine and Bissell do not get along and refuse to co-operate and work together…oh well, easier to deal with than having either one of them go to the electrical appliance doctor…

End result for day…one clean hallway…finally…yay!

Also put up two more sticky hooks in sewing room and hung a couple of baubles that are much prettier on the wall than in their boxes…re-organised cutting table sans tele…cutting mat no longer partially obscured by wooden ruler holder do-dads (technical term there)…all good 🙂

Clean Up Progress…

The sewing room renovations have been continuing…details take so much longer with nothing to show…so in three weeks…

  • small quilts hung back up on the sewing room wall…

  • new light shade put up (the original one sacrificed itself during the washing of the ceiling…OK I knocked it with the mop and it broke) after returning to the shop and getting the washer jigger than goes on the inside so that when the batten skirt is reattached the shade doesn’t fall down…I could not for the life of me figure out how it was supposed to work when the hole in the top of the shade was considerably larger than the batten skirt to hold it up…turns out I was missing a bit…oh that would be the problem…

  • antenna point and powerpoint installed…while that was happening Jindi and I jumped into Larry and scooted up the highway to get the wall bracket thingy…so glad I didn’t attempt bracket installation by myself, it was much trickier that I thought it would be…all done now and tele off the cutting table and on the wall where it can be easily viewed in the sewing room and from the office (study) room (the doors are in line) as the bracket is one of those move about tilty types…

  • little shelf thingy back on wall and thimbles reinstated…

  • entire (last) weekend taken up with The Great Scanathon Project…scanning all the paper in folders and display books that took up too much space…sorted, discarded some and scanning the rest into an electronic library of notes and patterns that were previously either handwritten or photocopied…it took AGES…but the pile is finally diminished…Oy, the poor trees!!!

  • one bookcase listed for sale…hasn’t worked so far but you never know someone might want it…

The end result of all this is a sewing room space that is SO much nicer to be in…actually it was so nice to be in I spent just about a whole week in there and just shut my eyes to the rest of the house!!!

This weekend I moved to the next room – my bedroom – walls and ceiling washed, carpet shampooed, light shade washed – and it survived the experience!!!  Yesterday I washed/aired all the bedding…blankets, allegen covers, etc…turned the mattress…and put the room back together…pushed the bed slightly across the room so it is closer to the window and now there is a much larger floor space…makes the room seem bigger…I’m thinking of going furniture shopping again for this room…I have two IKEA chests of drawers which don’t match in with the bed and bedside tables but were good enough at the time…time to go shopping for something better suited…the trick will be finding something the right size…

Mmm…maybe I have got a few things done…helps to write it out…it’s easy to forget just how much work…and time!…it actually takes to get the little things done…

A New Start…

With the moving of quilty/crafting happenings that leaves this blog for recording other aspects of my world…I’ve set myself a goal of cleaning up, decluttering and generally reclaiming control and order of my house and yard…2011 The Year Of The House!…

It is too big a job to tackle all at once…I need to break it up into manageable sized tasks…if I try to tackle the whole it becomes overwhelming…and that is what has been happening…looking at the whole picture and being overwhelmed and therefore doing nothing…a bit at a time is much more achievable…

I started with the sewing room…an obvious choice as it gains me the biggest reward of a more useable space…

So…from this…

Beyond chaotic…unusable…can’t find anything without an archaelogical dig…

To this…

Ah…a useable space again…where basic supplies like table tops and sewing machines can be found without said archaelogical dig…

And all it took was three days of concentrated attention…figuring out how to take cargo barrier out of Larry and put seats down (first challenge) in order to transport flat packs, a trip to Melbourne to IKEA (a challenge for Mistea as I lost all ability to function in Melbourne that day…who forgets how to operate the car park pay machine for goodness sake!), managing to get flat packs from Larry into house (second challenge), moving furniture, washing walls, shampooing carpet, building furniture contained in IKEA flat packs…and then as that worked out so well…doing it all again for other side of the room…including second trip to Melbourne to IKEA stupidly undertaken on a Sunday afternoon, not my best idea that one…followed by remainder of week sorting and fine tuning details…not finished yet, there are a few things to go back up on the walls, some sorting and cleaning out still to be done, but it is a whole lot better than it was and I’m loving having a space that is fun to be in again…
Still to be done – stick up hanging hooks for small quilts…rehang little wooden shelf thingy and redisplay thimbles…have TV antenna point installed…put TV on wall on adjustable bracket thingy (buy adjustable bracket thingy)…sort stuff in baskets…scan patterns and notes printed off web, on class sheets, etc in folders to reduce paper…sort stuff in wardrobe…create better wardrobe storage…sell or donate bookcases no longer required…
